Blog #1.5 Should a student be considered a customer?
This is a tough question, one that I cant actually take a side on. I am willing to guess that most any argument for a student being considered a customer is that they pay tuition. It's seemingly obvious, you pay for a service or item, and your a customer. Your continued interactions with those who are providing said service or item is what guarantees their livelihood. So it is in their best interest to treat us as customers, or as they say "always right". Yet that's where the problem is, if we were always right we wouldn't be seeking out a means of gaining knowledge. Also the amount of knowledge you receive is mostly dependent on the amount of effort put forth. Sure better teachers improve our ability to gain knowledge but still ultimately its up to us. So why should they treat us as customers when we approach them, and in the process admit our inferiority. While that sounds drastic I believe there's definitely some semblance of truth to that statement. So should they treat us like customers? I'm leaning to no, but then I remember that I'm giving them my money, and that makes me just a little bit bitter. So yeah why not, they should treat us like customers.

I think this is a good answer. However, I'm confused, do you think you should be treated as a customer just because you are paying money for tuition, or do you think it is up to you as a student to get your "money's worth" of knowlege?
ReplyDeleteIn a roundabout way I was saying that it's a question of perspective. If you're in the position of the student why wouldn't you want to be treated with the up most level of service, even if we recognize the fact we are not in a position to deserve it, it's just common sense. So I'm going to definitely say i was arguing the former, as for the latter I really don't feel I made such an argument, or at least that wasn't my intention.
