Reconsidering your research title

Considering my current working title is Research Paper i really need to work on this

Some ideas

A Foray Into Publishing
Discovering Worlds (corny)
Learning To Write

I am not very good with titles so these still need some work.

What Consitiutes Evidence

Facts given by Professional of their field backed up by peer scrutiny published in their own words.

Somewhat specific but ussually this is what i look for. facts are obvious, if i see i feel or something along those lines i generally move forward with more scrutiny. A professional is someone with some form of recongnized accrediation or experince in their field. For peer scrutiny i feel it's important because if its a topic i know nothing about i probably with assume everything they say is fact, when they could jsut be spouting nonsense. With peer scrutiny or a disenting opinion i know that others in their field either accept what they propose or are willing to take the time to argue a counter point adding some form a of validity to their arguments. Finally regarding it being published in their own words, i think it is important that what they say is not filtered by someone who may or may not have the same opinion, or worse yet not understand what they are editing on to wrongly relay information.

Outline of research topic

Execise 8.1 Recongnizing Patch Writing

First issue
sentance 1 switches wikipedia and washington but keeps the sentance intact otherwise.
2
Took the second sentace removed some words and braceted information and changed "flattering verbage" to "flattering words"
3
Took the last sentance from the source and cut out some information information.

Revised version
Wikipedia and its volunteer editors have discovered some political meddling in their service. Reprenative Marty Meehan in a interview with the Lowell Sun Newspaper discussed altering his own Wikipedia entry to potray a more sutable public image. As a result Wikipedia had disallowed any acess to its service for computers dealing with the House of Represenatives on Capatol Hill.

Reserach Matters Comments

I really have no complants, when i need to know something i can easily referance it using this book. The only problem i have is that sometimes certain things are hard to find and it requires a bit more reading than i would like for a quick referance. Also the size is conveinent and i don't know of any other reserach book so I would say keep going with this one.

exercise 1.1 Intrest Inventory

Music

Politics Founding of the US system of government

Technology Evolution of the Internet

Religion compare and contrast the evolution of the main modern religions

current affairs Compare a current issue with something similar from the past

education How much history do we actuall know or learn

History Life of Napolean

Culture influnces of European culture during the Imperial Age

I wen with a broad intrest but ultimatly it was harder than i thought to get specific. Some time i will have to go back and possibly get more specific with some of these topics

Exercise 9.1 Plagerism and Source Use

I choose to complete the Empire State College Plagiarism Quiz
The first question involved patch writing
The second question involved giving proper credit to images
The third question involves loosing the original article, but properly paraphrasing and including footnotes(got this one right but i did guess a bit)
The fourth question involves programming plagiarism, interesting since this is my major.
Fairly obvious don't reuse code lines or algorithms
The final question dealt with a distinct phrase you come across in an article. The phrase must be put into quotation marks and you must provide a citation to the author.
I got all the questions right save for the last one. I think this is possibly from me loosing interest, but i still took notes as to why i got it wrong.

Places visited to help address grammar issues

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/communication/how-to-improve-your-spelling-skills.html

Most website results were quite insulting. This site however list a few tricks to help inprove your spelling.
1. Read a lot
2.Make a list of commonly misspelled words.
3.use Menominee to help remember how to spell certain words.
4. write a lot

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/607/02/
general rules for comma usage.

Own Worst Grammatical Issue

Spelling hands down is my biggest grammatical issue. I never have been very good at spelling since elementary school, and never worked on it. My main issue with this is my vocabulary is far more well rounded in comparison to my spelling. I can use a word but hardly spell it. Sometime the spelling is so wrong that spell check has no idea what I'm trying to type. A close second for grammatical issues is comma usage. I go with what i feel and that's hardly ever right.

vark questionnaire

My results were kinesthetic and close second was read/write. From what i found on the website they simply said learn by doing (kinesthetic). This does make sense for me because i do learn best from trial and error. However i also feel i learn well from demonstration, and asking specific questions from an instructor.

Thesis Statement

What does it take to write something, anything? What does it take to follow through with your idea and present it to scrutiny? I have had an interest in writing since junior high, but have never even completed a draft. Using this paper as a springboard, I intend to finally know the answers to these questions. This is my attempt at a professional writing process with the intent of submitting a short story for publishing.

The southpaw's seccret semantics

Brownlee, Shannon. "The Southpaw's Secret Semantics." U.S.News & World Report (1992): 66. Print.

The article by Shannon Brownlee, covers the scientific endeavor to reveal the inner workings of the brain, and how it relates to dominate handedness, and the development of linguistics. It has long been a debate on how children learn to speak. Whether it is through immersion, or genetics, scientists are still uncertain as to how we can comprehended the implicit rules of grammar. Scientist such as Noam Chomsky of MIT, and Thomas Bever of the University of Rochester, point out that all languages fallow somewhat similar rules. This is paired with the knowledge that right handed and left handed people have different hemisphere dominance in the brain. Right handed people generally have dominance in the left hemisphere, while left handed people use the right. If language is somehow a product of genetics, than that leads to the possibility that if a left handed person exists in a predominately right handed genetic line, that would alter how that right handed person processes language. This hypothesis was backed up with testing that concluded that purely right handed families rely on association, and are more adept to the rules of language. Where as a right handed person in a family with a left handed person relies on memorization. This ultimately points to the fact that language could be genetic, but is still under much scrutiny. Further understanding will lead us to an understanding in how humans use and develop language.

Blog #8: What constitutes evidence

Blog #7: Annotation for 1 source

Amato, Mary. "Dear Diary: A Fiction Writer's Secret Tool." Illinois Reading Council Journal 37.2 (2009): 3-7. EBSCO. Web. 28 Feb. 2011.

Mary Amato had a problem figuring out how she should write her next novel, her characters voice was being lost, and she had to ask herself who this character was communicating with. She solved this problem with a diary, the character would write to herself. By using a diary you can flesh out a character, let their inner most thoughts come out in a natural way. By inhabiting this character as a writer it should also ease the development of their traits. This can also be used in minor characters. By writing a diary for even the most mundane characters you can develop them into likable characters, thus making your characters and world more likable and believable. I will try this method out for developing my characters, and I find it interesting how it pairs with the character trait list. However it remains to be seen if I continue to employ this method as I was never a diary type person.

Blog 6: Bonfiglio

Bonfiglio, Robert. “College: A Time of Wonder.” About Campus (May 2006): 27-29. Print.

In “College: A Time of Wonder” by Robert A. Bonfiglio, he starts his discussion by pointing out the irony of students being anxious or even fearful, and the excitement that seems coupled by the prospects of starting college. The fear he says, comes from the experience of a radically different environment, academically and socially, than anything they've experienced before. The excitement is derived from the thoughts of reaching a new, very recognizable chapter in their life. Bonfiglio then goes into the evolution of collegiate academics, stating that pre World War II colleges were elitist institution. The administration and graduates felt that completing college was a simple matter of you either have the ability, or not. This led to these individuals to purport themselves as social and academic elites. However with the end of World War II, more individuals wanted to become educated as well as had the means to do so. University’s started focusing on retention of their students, and started developing programs and carefully structured freshmen curriculum to help integrate the incoming freshmen population more seamlessly. This further evolved into institutions educating their students on such aspects of crime or racial discrimination. Unfortunately the approach colleges have taken in the past to help ease students into college life has shifted to focus less on academics, and more on social issues such as drug abuse. Also a lack of advising to an incoming freshmen class makes the message portrayed as don't thrive in college, but survive it. Bonfiglio I feel, wishes to get across the point that through education, we can overcome the new issues that freshmen encounter, whether it's a more diverse racial environment, inability to cope with new found freedoms, or a more strenuous curriculum. Through education we are all both capable and equal.

Research topics

No idea, lets just wing this for now.

Programming/applications
A look into my major and how i can apply the knowledge gained to a practical application. Some ideas include research into industry expectations. Or making a project and documenting the process. I most likely will not pick this topic though.

maybe challenge the perception of a historical event
Take a commonly known historical event and write about it from a different angle. More or less play the devils advocate. I would not pick something controversial as i would find it hard to argue for the other side, but maybe something more mundane in comparison. One topic I think i could cover would be the conquests of Napoleon and take it from the angle of someone who looks at the possible benefits and successes of his reign.

Publication
Write a sort story, submit it and talk about the process. Fairly straight forward, but it's something i always wanted to do.

etc.

Really can not think of anything, I will edit this post when I think of more.

Blog #1.5 Should a student be considered a customer?

This is a tough question, one that I cant actually take a side on.  I am willing to guess that most any argument for a student being considered a customer is that they pay tuition.  It's seemingly obvious, you pay for a service or item, and your a customer.  Your continued interactions with those who are providing said service or item is what guarantees their livelihood.  So it is in their best interest to treat us as customers, or as they say "always right". Yet that's where the problem is, if we were always right we wouldn't be seeking out a means of gaining knowledge.  Also the amount of knowledge you receive is mostly dependent on the amount of effort put forth.  Sure better teachers improve our ability to gain knowledge but still ultimately its up to us.  So why should they treat us as customers when we approach them, and in the process admit our inferiority.  While that sounds drastic I believe there's definitely some semblance of truth to that statement.  So should they treat us like customers?  I'm leaning to no, but then I remember that I'm giving them my money, and that makes me just a little bit bitter.  So yeah why not, they should treat us like customers.

Blog #1: Previous experience with research papers

My previous experience with research papers is probably no different than the average student.  High School stressed all forms of writing including research papers, with a more intense focus during my senior year.  The second half of senior English revolved solely around our senior projects.  These projects included school run events, job shadowing, or even creating art.  All this was done with the intention of researching aspects and or possibilities of our future careers.  My senior project involved shadowing an editor at the Erie Times News.  All of my shadowing culminated in a research paper paired with a presentation.  So as far as my previous experience with research papers, this stands out the most, on account of it making it painfully obvious that I never wanted to be a journalist.  Experiences with research papers of course continued into my first college the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  However in general it curriculum is nothing to look fondly upon or even bring up as past experience.
